Interview with Misa Aihara

I was born in 1942 in Ibaraki prefecture, Japan and graduated from Joshibi Univ. of Art & Design, Tokyo. I have exhibited my works in numerous solo or group exhibitions since the early 1970's in Japan, all over Europe and in USA. I also participated in Art Biennial exhibitions in Florence, and London. I received Art awards from Chianciano Art Museum in Italy, The Global Art Awards and so on.

Could you please introduce yourself and tell us how you started in the arts? and your first experience in art making?

I am a Japanese contemporary artist recognized for the Lyrical abstract compositions of vibrant colors and elegant expressive lines. At the age of 14 I wanted to be an artist-painter. After the art training at the art college I realized that I was much interested in Abstract painting.Since then I have  making abstract paintings.

How would you describe yourself and your artwork?

I am exploring the subject: what is the reality of a painting.I want to do it with every kinds of figurative abstract elements on canvas; color, shapes, compositions, touch of a brush, texture, splash and so on. I want to give an emotional and spiritual impact to a composition of figurative abstract elements.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everything around me gives inspiration to me. It provokes my  life and art experience and drives me to creation. My visual experience is my motive power.

I am much influenced by a Japanese artist in the 17th century, Tawaraya Sotatu.

What emotions do you hope the viewers experience when looking at your art?

I hope they find another approach to artwork: not to think what object is represented, but what emotion they are accepting from it.

When do you know that an artwork is finished?

When each work shows what I imagined.

What has been the most exciting moment in your art career so far?

My first participation of Florence Art biennial exhibition in 2005. I saw what kind of work I was doing in the midst of other artists from the world.

How long does it take to produce one work?

Depends on each work: from 2 days to several years.

What exciting projects are you working on right now?

A project to see how long and how far I can go in my art

Do you have any upcoming events or exhibitions we should know about?

A group exhibition at Grimandi Art Gallery in NYC, USA, 2020.
