Interview with Luia Corsini

Interview with Luia Corsini

Luia is an Italian-American artist, born in NYC on the 31st of December in 1994. Her passion for art originated growing up in Rome, Italy. Her time there allowed her to develop a keen eye and an appreciation for beauty and culture. Luia then moved to the Swiss Alps for two years, where she lived her daily life exposed to the rough yet refined beauty of nature. Luia studied Fine Arts at the New York University in New York City, where she learnt how to paint and create her own style, through studying and being exposed to contemporary art around the city. After her studies, she moved to Barcelona, to learn and get inspiration from the Catalan culture. Now Luia is living in-between Malibu California and Mexico City where she is painting in her two studios, creating beautiful color inspired large scale paintings.

Could you please introduce yourself and tell us how you started in the arts? and your first experience in art-making?

My name is Luia Corsini, I am an Italian/American artist, focusing on abstract and contemporary themes.

At NYU I started with sculpture and quickly moved to painting, I was fascinated by the versatility of painting and the capacity to express perspectives beyond the third Dimension (4D, 5D etc), which included my ideas and emotions in vivid colors.

My earliest recollection of really enjoying drawing was at an airport when I was about 9 years old, our flight was delayed by 4 hrs and my brother had a notebook he was drawing on for an assignment. It inspired me to do the same. I’ll never forget how much I enjoyed the feeling of creating something from nothing, zoning in and loosing track of time.

How would you describe yourself and your artwork?

I’m interested in exploration and discovery. I think most of my inspirations come from living in a creative way, not sticking to a specific schedule. I like to keep my weeks interesting, meeting new people, going to new places and trying new things. I also like to be reserved and take time to myself to process a lot of what I experience, which helps me then during my creative process. Where I’ve lived in the past three years speak of my search and need to move, I’ve lived in; Tuscany, Barcelona, Ibiza, Malibu and soon Mexico City and I have also travelled extensively.

My art work is both abstract & geometric, I search for minimal expressions. It is a constant study of the relationship between form, color and spirit. I would urge the viewer to begin by closing their eyes and let go of thoughts and pre conceptions. Then I would like them to open their eyes and observe my painting and let the his or her ideas and impressions formulate.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I find inspiration in colors and energies which I have memorized or explored in nature, from sun sets, to; water, earth, dry leaves, wet leaves, landscapes, cities, movement. I also find inspiration in the colors and shapes other artists work with, such as Pablo Picasso, Agnes Martin, Hilma Klint, Bosco Sodi among others.

What emotions do you hope the viewers experience when looking at your art?

I wish the viewer to feel whatever they want to feel when looking at my art. I would prefer them to feel calm and serene, because my paintings are mostly inspired by nature and are often inspired by places I go to relax and connect with my inner self.

When do you know that an artwork is finished?

I don’t usually have trouble determining when an art work is finished, because I like to keep my work minimal. I feel like an artwork is finished when I am fully satisfied with the balance between the colors and the geometric shapes.

What has been the most exciting moment in your art career so far?

I find every moment of being an artist exciting! Being in my studio gives me great pleasure, creating something new and being satisfied with the results is fulfilling. Meeting a collector who is interested and wants to purchase my work is exciting. I want my art to populate homes of interesting people to add to their energy and intellect. I also find excitement in promoting my work, getting feedback and support from friends, talking and inspiring other artists is all very exciting for me.

How long does it take to produce one work?

It depends on the piece; but I would say about a week to a month. I like to work on two to three paintings at a time, it keeps me motivated and inspired.

What exciting projects are you working on right now? Can you share some of the future plans for your artwork?

I am working on a series which consists of natural dyes, I want to explore and study the different dyes extracted from local fruits and vegetables. Not being able to leave the house and my studio during Covid, inspired me to try new ways of painting which lead me to a more natural approach. I am excited to see how these paintings will turn out!

I am also moving to Mexico City in the fall, where I wish to work with clay and other natural substances to explore the different tonalities and colors from the land.

Do you have any upcoming events or exhibitions we should know about?

Due to the current situation, things are very uncertain at the moment, however I am working on show at the Palo Gallery in NYC. Check my IG @studioluiacorsini for updates.

Where do you see your art going in five years?

I see my art changing forms and mediums, and exploring an array of different materials, such as glass, mirrors and light. I would like to get back to sculpture and explore creating in large scale. I also would like my art to inspire as many people as possible, which means exhibiting in as many places, countries and cultures as possible.
