Biography

I am a Franco-Canadian artist who works in oil, gouache, printmaking and tapestry. I have taken part in group exhibitions in France, Montreal and New York and solo exhibitions in Lebanon; some of my works has been featured in digital publications in Spotlight, Art Ideal magazine and Circle Foundation for the Arts.

If painting and sketching come to me intuitively, I realized early on that art opened a door to a world of wonder, of magic; at least that is the impression I got from attending drawing classes and that feeling has never left me. I also believe that art should touch one’s heart and enlighten one’s soul.

At the School of Fine Arts, Henri Gowa taught me the technique of colours, hues and harmony as used by the painters of the Middle Ages and the preparation of the support. In my oil paintings I have followed his teaching.

Graphic art is also present in my work. I was fortunate to have been a student of Frans Masereel, whom I consider to be one of the greatest woodcut artists of the twentieth century. In my black and white period, I have experimented with and adapted the techniques of woodcutting to ink drawing which allows me to use larger surfaces, to render space and volume through crisp lines and bold areas of inked or bare paper. For this contest, I chose to submit an ink drawing "Dancing with the Stars". As in graphic art, modelling is kept to a minimum; to achieve a vibrant and powerful composition, I placed the figure at the centre of the composition and exploited the white surface to generate a sense of movement that draws the viewer in.
