Artist Statement

"I am not looking for idyllic landscapes or fascinating beings. They are, i see them in the world i live in. and i make them mine not only with paints and brushes but also with the spirit. In the process, the initial reality is being transcended to become "my reality".

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

I consider myself an artist by birth. From a very young age, my favorite game was to draw people and objects in my environment. The decision to follow the path of art arose after the contemplation of the great masters of Spanish painting, Velázquez, Goya, Murillo ... at the Prado Museum, at the age of 7

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

As I have carried art with me from a very young age, I think it is something innate, genetic. In fact I was born into a family of art lovers and artists.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

I paint the world around me, a tiny part of the Universe. And I do it not only with my hands and materials but with the spirit, with my emotions, experiences and feelings. I want the viewer to capture all of this and to feel an identification with me. I think I get it most of the time.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

My works progress after a slow process of creation, from the first compositional strokes to the end. In this process I leave my successes and my mistakes to myself. So the result of the work is not exactly what I am seeing, a landscape, a person, etc. but the external is configured, wrapped in my self. Thus the reality from which I start and which inspires me is transcended; and it becomes another reality, the one I have created. In the process I add, delete, imagine ...

What is your favourite part of the creative process?

It is the first stage, in which I decide what composition, what color, what elements will appear in the work. This is fascinating. Then, in the following stages, although many details remain to be decided, the process is more technical, and therefore less exciting.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

Now I am preparing a retrospective exhibition to be held in Tangier next September. I lived in Tangier for six years and the fascination for the city, for its buildings, for its people, came immediately. It's been twenty years since I lived there and I still dedicate part of my works to it. In this sense, I have to tell you that I only paint what impacts me, what fascinates me. The process, if you start from this emotional situation, is exciting.
