Artist Spotlight - Sezin Aksoy
Biography
Sezin Aksoy is a London-based Turkish artist whose multidisciplinary practice bridges painting, performance, and installation. She began her academic journey in the United States, earning a double major in Business Administration from Bryant University in 2003. Following a period of professional work in the corporate world, her creative calling led her toward the visual arts. She pursued a Post-Baccalaureate degree and completed the four-year Diploma Program in just one year at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (now SMFA at Tufts University), graduating in 2007.

Aksoy’s artistic journey is shaped by an ongoing exploration of transformation expressed through her thematic series Transfiguration (2010), Transmutation (2012), Transcendental (2014), Transpersonal (2019), and Transit (2024). Each series delves into the interconnectedness between the human psyche, spirituality, and the natural world. Her use of vivid color, symbolic imagery, and mythological references transforms her canvases into meditative spaces that bridge the visible and the invisible, the personal and the collective.

Her most recent exhibition, Transit, held at Fitzrovia Gallery in London, presented a synthesis of painting and performance, inviting viewers to reflect on modern society’s spiritual dualities and reconnections with nature. Aksoy has exhibited internationally in Tokyo, Paris, Salzburg, Barcelona, and London, and her works are held in both private and public collections.

Through her art, Aksoy seeks to express transpersonal states of consciousness experiences that transcend the boundaries of self and move into the universal. Her practice is deeply rooted in shamanistic philosophy, color healing, and symbolic storytelling, echoing her fascination with the unseen emotional and spiritual forces that shape existence.

Artist Statement
My work explores the transpersonal: states of consciousness that move beyond the boundaries of the individual and into the shared spaces of spirituality, memory, and the natural world. I see art as both a healing practice and a symbolic language — one that allows us to translate emotions, intuitions, and experiences that cannot be captured by words alone.

Through painting, performance, and installation, I use color as a primary tool of transformation. Color, for me, is not just visual but energetic; it carries emotional resonance and healing potential. Alongside this, symbols drawn from mythology, shamanic traditions, and ancestral practices create a visual vocabulary that connects modern viewers with ancient forms of knowledge. Figures such as Circe or Hecate, animals like the owl, bear, or fish, and elemental forms like water or fire often appear in my work as guides through inner landscapes of change.

I am deeply inspired by the continuity between ancient and contemporary spiritual practices. Just as shamans, healers, and storytellers once worked with ritual and symbol to reconnect communities with nature, I believe art today can play a similar role: a reminder that we are part of a greater whole. By weaving together myth, ecology, and the human psyche, I aim to dissolve the separation between human and non-human, spirit and matter, past and present.

Ultimately, my practice is a search for transformation — of the self, of space, and of collective consciousness. Each work is an invitation to pause, to listen, and to recognize the unseen forces that shape our existence. Whether through the quiet resilience of a ladybug, the embrace of a mother bear, or the silent gaze of an owl, I seek to reveal the spiritual and emotional depths of the natural world, and to honor the intuitive knowledge carried by women across time.
