Biography

Portia Hibbert is a self-taught 34 year old Bristol-based artist. Primarily painting with acrylics and oils, she enjoys experimenting with other media to create or portray different textures.

She lets inspiration guide her style, often challenging herself to grow in a specific area. Finding beauty in the therapy of painting, she has found the process especially helpful when managing her epilepsy, a recurring theme throughout her pieces.

Painting through the obstacles having a disability brings, enables some acceptance. Other inspirations come from nature, which has always been a grounding force, and other life experiences like relationships and femininity.

Artist Statement

I have epilepsy and life lately has been a health struggle. I found art whilst looking for an outlet for my emotions and stumbled on painting - I instantly fell in love with it; the freedom of expression, communicating my feelings and the ability to constantly learn and experiment. Two years later, this journey continues to be a liberating one!

I do not believe in perfection, but the beauty of expression through colour and texture. Through my art I wish to speak to someone, to help others process their emotion but also to raise awareness of the struggles of a hidden, long-term health condition.
