Artist Statement

I am Asian of Indian heritage and was born in Uganda, East Africa. At the age of 17, I decided to travel to England to study Art. After undergraduate and a graduate degree in painting, I received scholarship to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London for master’s degree in painting and sculpture. Following my studies, I was awarded a fellowship in sculpture at the Gloucestershire College of Art, Cheltenham.

This combination of studies allowed me to develop a groundbreaking process to merge the two disciplines, sculpture and painting. I begin my creative process by going through a series of rituals. Each painting starts on a clay bed carved as a three-dimensional drawing which becomes a negative mold.

This impression is then transferred to a flexible acrylic canvas, which is stretched and or formed as a 3D object, painted with oil colors mixed with metallic powders. This process affords me an infinite variety of textures and depths in order to capture the feeling of an organic landscape, rocky surface, heather on the fields, or an ocean floor.

My passion has always been to experience the existence of the intimate connection that exists between creativity and spirituality. After years of meditation and studying variety of energy healing modalities I feel the energy in all my life experiences. My purpose is to translate this energy into the Artform. I find the most magical part of my process is the moment of seeing both the original clay carving and its mirrored counterpart.

It’s like witnessing a conversation between past and present, or between my inner and outer worlds. There’s something deeply personal about this space, where I can reflect on my own light and shadow, and the coexistence of both my creative and personal life. Each piece that I create has a life of its own and a message beyond the mind. In my understanding, it comes from our multi-dimensional self beyond our physical. I recognize this as a gift from the universe and that it has to be shared.
