Marija Tanaskovic Papadopoulos
Biography
Marija Tanaskovic Papadopoulos was born in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1976, where she graduated from the University of Fine Arts in 2001 as a sculptor. In 2004, she moved to Chicago. Today, she is a highly acclaimed multimedia artist mentioned in numerous magazines, art books, blogs, websites, and articles. International art critics have placed her among prominent contemporary artists, while the MSN media platform has recognized her among the most dominant artists for 2026.
She has exhibited in the USA, Canada, the UK, Italy, France, Monaco, South Korea, Hungary, Egypt, Turkey, and Serbia.
Her artistic creativity encompasses many different techniques, ranging from traditional to digital approaches, including terracotta, oil on canvas, drawings, watercolors, pastels, and photography. She merges original styles with contemporary computer programs such as Adobe Suite for 2D graphics and ZBrush for digital sculpting. Despite her connection to the digital domain, Marija does not use AI in her art.
The wide range of her creative approaches has made her a universal explorer of the essence of consciousness itself. She sees artistic composition as a trigger for our thoughts, which she believes spread through the radiation of brain waves during the process of observation. For her, this process is not only a source of enjoyment for the audience but also the completion of a creative process that begins when the artist presents an artwork to the world.
Her perspective connects art, quantum physics, and psychology. Through her practice, she attempts to give shape to feelings, reach understanding, and explore these ideas through the lens of modern science.
Artist Statement
Visual art is about passing energy to other people through symbols and the vibration of lines, color wavelengths, and shapes within the space surrounding an artwork. For me, the meaning of an artwork lies not only in what the composition presents, but also in the specific structure of the piece, which enables a human being to perceive beauty as a source of harmony.
Artists navigate our thoughts to create a new reality.
Art pieces are triggers that, once observed and analyzed, extend the creative process beyond the artist. This means that observers participate in shaping the world together with the artist by gradually bringing the message of the artwork into reality, just as sea waves shape stones along a coast.
So, what is the shape of an art piece? The shape of an artwork exists to transfer energy not simply through the physical material from which it is made, but through the idea hidden within its composition, which is activated through observation and interpretation by the public.
Additional conclusion and explanation regarding the contemporary artist statement given by the artist in 2006:
“Today’s achievements in modern medicine, chemistry, and psychology can include contemporary visual art as one of the sources for exploring possible approaches to understanding health, human perception, and much more.
I have long been interested in the relationship between quantum physics, observation, electromagnetic processes, and the way human beings experience the world. Within my artistic philosophy, I consider the observer an essential participant in the process through which an artwork acquires meaning.
I am particularly interested in the idea that thought, perception, and observation generate patterns of experience that influence the way we understand our surroundings. In this sense, each thought may be understood metaphorically as a form of energy that participates in shaping our relationship with reality.
For me, beautiful and peaceful thoughts represent a way of moving toward a more harmonious state of being.
Knowledge can help us achieve that state of mind.
Art, therefore, may be understood as a form of knowledge capable of opening new ways of thinking about perception, consciousness, and human experience. Visual forms can carry what I describe as an ‘aesthetic code,’ capable of stimulating emotional and intellectual responses in the observer.
There is still much that remains unknown about the human brain and consciousness. Through the exploration of art, however, we may continue expanding our understanding of the way we experience life, because art has always opened doors within the human psyche that we may not previously have known existed.”
