Artist Spotlight - Subodh Maheshwari
Biography
Subodh Maheshwari was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, North India where she learned folk art and classical music. She passionately believes: “In the threshold of my life, my present is the window to the past and a key to the future”. She acquired her degrees and studied art at Agra University, California State University of Fullerton, and the University of California Irvine.

Subodh has won numerous awards, including the regional Fellowship Award at UCI in 1986, the Bharat Gaurav Award in India in 2015, and the 60 Masters Award in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She is also registered in Marquis "Who's Who in America," the standard in biographical information. Her paintings have also won awards in a variety of categories including landscape, open, all women, nature, elements, seasons, and abstract.

Subodh has participated in many shows, both nationally and internationally, including the fourth Cosmopolitan Exhibition in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Asiamania! 2018 in Seoul, the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in Chelsea, NY, the Indian Art Festival in 2014, and several years at Art Expo in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.

The 2023 group exhibition “In The Time of Climate Change” at the Wailoa Center, University of Hawaii at Hilo, featured work from her Global Warming series. Subodh’s work has also been displayed in many online group shows, including those hosted by Teravarna and HMVC Gallery New York.

One of Subodh’s greatest joys includes teaching art to all ages. For over forty years, she has taught art classes at University of California, Irvine and Riverside Community College District. Through UCLA, she taught art classes at the Chino Women’s Prison, helping her students learn new skills. She has offered art therapy, private lessons, and workshops utilizing different mediums and subjects. She has curated art shows and given lectures on art and Indian culture at multiple galleries and museums.

On teaching, she says, "I specialize in lifting and exercising your soul, body, and mind through art and creativity. I get great pleasure and satisfaction in teaching my talents and experience to my students. I am very proud of their achievements."

Artist Statement
Subodh is a diversified international artist who tells stories through landscapes, florals, abstracts, miniatures, and symbolic art. Her art fuses Eastern symbolism and Western composition, influenced by 16th and 17th century Rajasthani art, accented by poetry, passages, and phrases in Hindi, Sanskrit, and English. She admires Georgia O'keeffe for her floral influence, and Frida Kahlo for her courage.

She finds inspiration in nature’s serene beauty, her spirituality, and the current political climate. Having a life shared between India and America, she sees beautiful similarities, like love which transcends all borders. Her works are emotional, mysterious, personal, spiritual, and humorous.
