Oct 15 Artist Spotlight - Stephan Custer

Biography

"As a self-taught artist, I have always drawn intermittently since my childhood. It took me a long time and deep introspection to be able to express my emotions on paper and canvas. At 40 years old, just like we learn to draw letters in school to make words, I wanted to acquire the basic skills I lacked.

So, humbly, I took courses at the National School of Fine Arts to learn about lines, ellipses, contrasts...
My paintings and drawings are a reflection of my life, my hopes, and my view of the world, but above all, they are the expression of what I could not yet put into words."

Artist Statement

"I try to replace my words and the emotions I feel with lines and colors on paper or canvas. Art primarily affects the soul and gives form to the spiritual structure of man. For Nietzsche, 'Art is given to us to prevent us from dying of the truth.'

I paint with my sensitivity, so I fear only one thing: losing it, because it is what connects me to others. Whether it’s painting or photography, light is the guide. For painting, Eugène Boudin reminded us that 'the artist brings light where one day it had gone out.' For photography, Wim Wenders said, 'the photographer writes with light.' And, for Thoreau, 'it’s not what you look at that matters, but what you see.'"
