Artist Spotlight - Aura Op den Camp
Aura at Studio Pulchri The Hague - 2021
Biography
I was born in Semarang (Indië) in Februari 1949. When Indië got independent in Dec. 1949 we had to leave the country in 1950 and moved to Stein, a little Catholic rural village in the south of the Netherlands. The complexity of our situation in that little village - surrounded by a beautifull scenic landscape formed the basis of my artistry. So opposite and so intertwined.

Artist Statement
Making art is my way to reflect on humanity and the world we live in. Our family situation and background became an early invitation for me to question everything around me. What about the meaning of religion? What about origin and destiny? What about the miraculous nature that comforts and surrounds us and travels with us on our life adventure. Without asking anything in return.
Aline Josephine Mehlbaum - my grandmother 2015 140 x 160 cm. Oilpaint on canvas
I work from my inner view and connection with the subjects of my artworks. Sometimes they tell a complete story- sometimes they just show some details of the complexity of all existence.
Artworks change whenever the observer changes.
Julian-E.M. Coenraad - my mother 2019 60 x 80 cm. Oilpaint on canvas
I am just trying to explain why I choose to be an artist and what it means to me. But actually I did not really choose: it just went like that. I wish my curiousity- astonishment- dreaming and thinking will make my artworks an invitation for the observer to discover themselves in my works. I work in several disciplines and the size of my works go from very small to very large.
The departure - 2019 100 x 100 cm. Oilpaint on canvas
I make drawings - paintings - graphics- collages- assembly and photography. As I need to be able to respond to what interests me - it depends on the circumstances whatever is best or whatever I like the most. However my works can be very different they will show my specific signature to the serious observer.
