Biography

My name is Victoria Bruno, and I have a BFA in Painting. I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and have a strong connection to the city in which I was brought up in. I present my art towards others with the notion of displaying the subjective truth of our bodies to the viewer, as my work is not created to be cut in stone. In my art, there is always the opportunity to have an opinion that is flexible towards the true intention of the artist. By working with ideas of the human condition, I offer a connection with those who choose to look at my art through the use of relatable ideals; being human. Through the process of making, I create art with the idea of being abstract with underlying symbolism of the subconscious mind to contrast reality. My life as an artist is shaped by these ideals, and I perform better as a creative thinker when faced with the difficulty of challenging the normality of our everyday world.

Artist Statement

As an artist, I work to create ideas that speak about medical intervention and surgical procedures of the body in regards to my own experience within my practice; being able to capture the physical scars and lifelong effects, as well as the mental trauma that these procedures have caused have always been an interesting development within my work. With that idea in mind, my artwork tends to be very vocal about issues surrounding mental and physical health from the female perspective and ideas of my own body and how I present that aspect of myself towards others.
I create art with the idea of being semi-abstract with underlying symbolism of the body to reflect the reality of my own experiences. Representations of the human form are usually represented within my work through the use of large bodily imagery; this being large-scaled depictions of the body that I render by looking at various medical journals and diagrams that represent the different procedures that my body has endured. These representations take on a fleshy appearance in an abstract nature with layering effects of the drawing, and the contrasting use of colour with a dark black. This work is typically done on a larger scale to create a greater sense of depth within the composition itself, as well as to engage the viewer with an up-close and personal display of what the interior of the body looks like; something that they otherwise wouldn’t necessarily see. My artwork is created particularly through the medium of oil, acrylic, watercolour, and gouache painting on canvas; as well as wax pastel on various types of paper. I typically work with different paper and paints to replicate and abstract different forms of my own body. By doing this, I am able to display the various medical experiences and ailments that I have had to go through without being too objective about it. I find that the relationship between materials and concepts play an important role during my process. Before I begin working on these concepts regarding human biology, I find it best to research a variety of medical diagrams and journals to get a visual feel of certain parts of the body. From there, I can then pick out a material that would work best in representing the texture and aesthetic qualities of the human body.
My work is not created merely to replicate the human body, but to display aspects of the human condition that others might not see or know about. Such as visually depicting different nerves of the body to display anxiety in regards to how these seemingly simple physical elements of our bodies have such a strong effect on our mental health. There is also strong representation of displaying beauty from the inside of the body, as I prefer to work with bright/vivid colours to make a seemingly 'flawed' body appear to be loud and seen by the viewer. I would consider my artwork to be Expressionist in nature, as I present my art towards others with the notion of displaying the subjective truth of our bodies to the viewer, as my work is not created to be cut in stone.
