Interview with Kumari Nahappan

Interview with Kumari Nahappan

Could you please introduce yourself and tell us how you started in the arts? and your first experience in art making?

My name is Kumari Nahappan. Introduction to the arts came in my teens and I went on to train as an interior designer in London in the early 70s. My fulltime art making started about 3 decades ago. My first experience came from nature and cultural experiences associated with time and installations.

How would you describe yourself and your artwork?

I am a conceptual artist and I build my content on concepts that interest me.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from life and life’s journeys, be it spiritual, mental, emotional, or physical.

What emotions do you hope the viewers experience when looking at your art?

I hope my viewers experience what I try to communicate with each composition, be it in the form of colour, technique, or material. Readings are open.

When do you know that an artwork is finished ?

When it is strong enough to speak for itself.

What has been the most exciting moment in your art career so far?

When I have created work where the heart, head and hand have come together.

How long does it take to produce one work?

This depends on the work itself. Every work has its own demands of time, scale and composition.

What exciting projects are you working on right now? Can you share some of the future plans for your artworks?

I am currently engaged in the production of an artwork for a boutique hotel in Bintan, Indonesia, alongside developing my studio practice.

Do you have any upcoming events or exhibitions we should know about?

My next upcoming exhibition will be in Venice 2019 running parallel to the Biennale. I am working on an artwork for the European Cultural Centre exhibition. I will also be showing at the START Art Fair at Saatchi Gallery in London in September 2018.

Where do you see your art going in five years?

My art evolves all the time and I take it as it comes!
