Interview with France Malo

France Malo creates exuberant figurative compositions with an abstract approach to the form that culminates in truly innovative contemporary artworks..." Amsterdam Whitney International Fine Arts, NY USA

"The lines drawn by France Malo cannot be placed in any Cartesian axis. The artist elaborates a signic and chromatic geometry. New visual architectures make their appearance and fascinate the look of the observer, which cannot do anything but look with admiration to the painting of this great interpreter of the contemporary art." Salvatore Russo Art Critic, ITALY

How would you describe yourself and your art world?

Passionate, active and evolutive would describe my art and me. In other words, the legacy of different experiences and art research identified by multiples production periods is often initiated by territory transfers.

« Puisque ma trajectoire personnelle a toujours été associée à ce mouvement migratoire entre des lieux souvent opposés, le mouvement, l'équilibre et l'identité colorée caractérisent mes réalisations. » MALO

"Through the active and sportive representation of human being, my art is based on the complex dynamic of life" MALO

" My art is based on the complex dynamic of life. Through the CLIMATIC ARCHITECTURES, ART SPORT and OBJETS FERTILES, all my senses and creativity are in alert… Art becomes adventure and evolution" MALO

How do you go about beginning a new piece? Do you have an idea already in mind, or do you start working with materials or sketches to find the departure point?

Energy is my creative fuel to start a new artwork or project. I may have to use a specific material for a technical commissions or a particular artistic exploration but I always trusted my intuition and creativity to initiate an artwork; inspiration, music, particular emotion, gesture, line, shape or color can all be starting points.

Actually, for my abstraction and “Climatic Architectures”, I am inspired by the marks and textures on reused canvases.

“ C'est à travers un long processus de recherches artistiques dans des univers et pays multiples que ma palette créative s'est révélée ; il y aura eu plusieurs périodes, matières et sujets. » MALO

When do you think your most prolific time of day or week?

Grateful for arts, I know myself and when it is the perfect time to create; the prolific period occurs when I reach the perfect balance between energy and concentration.

Seasons and creativity

Winter time slow down my production. This “dormance” period prepares me for the blooming spring’s season. During summer and fall periods, in and out my studio, I refresh my art with new ideas and technique experimentations.

" Ma recherche artistique m'oblige à ce continuel va-et-vient entre la ville et la campagne, entre la peinture et la céramique, entre l'abstraction et le réalisme, entre l'homme et son environnement. » MALO

What is a barrier you as an artist overcame? Is there anything that enabled you to develop your work as an artist in your life?

Even if living for and from arts is a surviving experience with liberty as guidance, having a child in a constantly moving family’s situation had limited at some point my production but I can’t  ignore all the experiences, encounters and knowledge acquisitions I made. It gives me more to say and to write.

Creative impulses never left me; it is vital.

“Living for and from arts is a surviving experience with liberty as guidance.” MALO

Did you have an idea of what you wanted to create right from the beginning?

I always knew I had to be an artist. Being captured by my tools for long hours in the drawing, painting or sculpting process, art’s life became at an early age an evident issue. I filled up my room and spaces with artworks: Comics and landscapes first, then everything.

“Creativity is an open source to understand life.”

What is the meaning or creative inspiration for your work? We’re curious what the narrative or story is to what you are producing?

As a creator, developing curiosity and trusting my intuition are the primary gifts I gave to myself.

Continuously challenging my senses while making lines as links, I have a better understanding of the integral human in this challenging world. Creating artworks with a dichotomous vision of this unprecedented global mutation, subject matters such as environment and identity give me more material than necessary.

« Les éléments de mes créations, qu'ils soient personnages, animaux ou formes architecturales sont les mémoires de mon vécu et de mes aspirations profondes sur l'humanité."   MALO

Besides your artworks, are there any other things in life that your voice as an artist may consider vital or valuable? What makes you joyful and creative, in other words?

Love, Liberty, activities and sports, having social life, travelling, writing and plenty of nature!

“Equilibrium in liberty is my vital obligatory necessary”. MALO

Are there any exhibitions or places where people can see these beautiful creations in person soon? Anything on the horizon?

In this pandemic period, the opportunities are just coming back for artists in my country. I am taking part in different group shows and this summer in two open studio circuits to show my new paintings, ceramics and sculptures.  I am planning a solo show for my “ Architecture Climatiques” serie. I hope to announce it soon. I also plan to renew with international exhibitions.
