Alessandro Paglia

My fetish for objects has long been fueled by my studies and my work in design. My passion for the surface of objects, volumes, materials, the interplay of light, the story that each subject tells, the hidden world it carries within itself. I have collected, designed, photographed them in the dark room set up in my parents' basement. I felt like a chemist and a medium, giving new life, artistic if you will, to the subjects I photographed. Another old passion of mine is drawing, as a kid I used to draw comic strips in black and white, especially noir. A passion which I never systematically cultivated, but a constant interest.

After years of serious work in product design, I sought out a new angle, a new keyhole to peek through, a door to open: I matched my old passions. Using the simplest of tools - a pen or a pencil - I combined the most meticulous technique I could imagine, namely the faithful reproduction of my photographs of objects, designed in large dimensions. This apparent contradiction intrigued me. And so, gradually experimenting, that door opened wide.

This is the origin of my new adventure, a tribute to my favorite objects, this time recounted in miles of pencil. I began by working on objects in every possible way, deforming them, making them explode, crushing them, immersing them in paint, freezing them, sewing them, folding them, a simple intervention that translates into a surprise for the eyes. The plan was simple from the very start: to create images of aesthetically and symbolically intriguing objects with a twist, with an unusual look. This new story is my happy obsession today.
