Biography

Artist Statement

tuxedodoom has its origin into conflict: it is the product coming from the combination of the stormy and dark in life, with the brightest colours. It is the deepest feelings solidifying. The layering of various techniques is used to achieve the characteristic texture, the acrylic dream.

What first prompted you to think of becoming an artist?

As many might say, I always felt the "urge" to be creative: it is one of first thoughts I can remember having, since I was a child. However it took many years for me to turn such a need into a life goal.

What kind of an artist do you ultimately see yourself?

The versatile kind, the one who's always willing to evolve: there's a beautiful quote by Willem de Kooning, written in neon light letters on the facade of the Art Academy of Rotterdam, saying "I have to change to stay the same" and I really think this pretty much summarizes my attitude towards this subject.

What are you hoping to communicate to the viewer through your work?

My purpose is to make something that anybody feels free to explain according to their own personal interpretation: I consider my work to be open and I want the viewers to determine what message hides in it.

Can you explain the process of creating your work?

At first, I imagine a rough scheme, a hint, some colours or forms: I may go with a sketch and then I start painting many (messy) layers, using various techniques, until I feel it is enough.

What is your favourite part of the creative process?

The central part is the one I like the most: it is when I feel I could go on forever.

Can you give us an insight into current projects and inspiration, or what we can look forward to from you in the near future?

At the moment I am working at several projects, however there's one in particular that is very special to me and a few things I am allowed to say: it is a collaboration with a brilliant musician, who managed to capture the "sound" in my paintings and I can't wait to share the results!
